rom
Patient was instructed on passive range of motion exercises, also called ROM
exercises. ROM
exercises can be active o passive. Active ROM
is done when a person can do the exercises by himself. Active-assisted ROM
is done by a person and a helper. Passive ROM
exercises are done for a person by a helper. The helper does the ROM
because the person cannot do them by himself.
Why is it important to do active ROM
exercises? ROM
exercises are very important if you have been ill, injured, or must stay in bed or in a wheelchair. Active ROM
exercises help build up or keep your muscles as strong as possible. They help keep your joints flexible ( bending and moving in the right way ). Doing ROM
exercises will help keep good blood flow going to the joint area that is being exercised. They may help prevent blood clots. Exercising is natural and needed for the body to stay well. Your heart pumps stronger and easier when you exercise regularly. You also breathe quicker and more often while exercising. This helps prevent infections that happen if you do not breathe or cough deeply enough. With your heart and lungs working stronger, more blood gets to the muscles, bones, and skin. Increasing blood flow brings more oxygen and other good things to your body tissues and organs. Walking and other exercises help make your BMs and urine more regular. Exercising can also make you feel better, more relaxed, and happier.
Patient was instructed on passive exercises (ROM
exercises), that are very important if patient is in bed or in wheelchair. ROM
exercises help keep the joints and muscles as healthy as possible. Without this exercises, blood flow and flexibility (moving and bending) of the joints can decrease. Joints, such as the knees and elbows, could become stiff and locked without ROM
exercises. Passive Rom
helps keep joint areas flexible, but do not built muscles or make them stronger.
Patient was instructed on Passive exercises or ROM
exercises. All exercises are done smoothly and gently. Never force, jerk or over-stretch a muscle. This can hurt the muscle or joint instead of helping. Move the joint slowly. This is especially important when having muscle spasms. ROM
exercises should never cause pain or go beyond the normal movement of the joint. Stop them if the person feels pain.
SN instructed patient on non pharmacological pain management like massage, a lot of people find relief from
gentle massage. Several studies have found that massage is effective in relieving pain and other symptoms for people with serious illness. Relaxation techniques like guided imagery, breathing techniques, and gentle movement like rom
exercises. Relaxation techniques are often very effective, particularly when a patient / caregiver is feeling anxious. Physical therapy if a person has been active before and is now confined to bed, even just moving the hands and feet a little bit can help. Pet therapy if you have bouts of pain that last 5, 10, or 15 minutes, trying to find something pleasant like petting an animal soft fur to distract and relax yourself can be helpful. Gel packs, these are simple packs that can be warmed or chilled and used to ease localized pain.
