Diabetes
Patient was instructed on diabetes. All body cells require glucose for energy. Glucose enters body cells with the help of a hormone called insulin, which acts somewhat like a gatekeeper. If the body becomes less responsive to insulin, or if the body is not producing insulin, glucose cannot pass through the cell wall and the cell "starves."
Instructed on the importance of having her nails clipped straight across and gently filed with an emery board.
Taught that effectively controlling high blood sugar levels help prevent circulation problems and blindness, among others.
Taught that effectively controlling high blood sugar levels help prevent heart disease, kidney disease and strokes, among others.
Taught that weight loss and changes in vision may constitute as signs/symptoms of Diabetes Mellitus.
Instructed on the need/importance of wearing shoes that are clean and fit properly.
Taught that infection, stress and/or fever may lead to high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia).
Taught that excess insulin and unusual exercise may lead to low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia).
Taught that seeing physician, dentist and eye doctor regularly is a measure aimed to managing/controlling Diabetes Mellitus (DM).
Instructed on the importance of having her/his feet washed daily with warm soap and water; also, instructed on the importance of having them patted dry, especially between toes.
